On December 2nd of last year, Midge VeDepo, age 77, was having breakfast with friends when she started having chest pain. She immediately went to the hospital and though initial tests looked normal, doctors decided to send her to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga for further evaluation.
As VeDepo was being boarded onto the helicopter for transport, the chest pain returned and she suffered an aortic aneurysm. While she laid in ICU after surgery, the surgeon said how fortunate she was because only one in ten survives an aortic repair such as hers.
Told that full recovery could take six months to a year, VeDepo knew she was in for a long road. However, she had an edge that has slashed her recovery time by months.
VeDepo has been a member of Murphy Health & Fitness for seven years and works out 8-10 hours per week. She does yoga, Zumba, Tai Chi, weight training and core group fitness classes.
“I’ve heard from so many nurses, doctors, and physical therapists that the reason I’ve done so well recovering from such a major surgery is because I was in such good shape,” said VeDepo. “My heart and lungs are in good shape and that saved my life!”
Three short months after her aortic aneurysm, Midge VeDepo was already back taking group fitness classes at Murphy Health & Fitness.
“So many people to thank,” said VeDepo. “We are fortunate to have such good professional help right here in Murphy. From Erlanger Western Carolina Hospital to the folks at Murphy Health & Fitness, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
